ASfYL has been supported and hosted by UWC Atlantic, the founding member of the United World College (UWC) movement, since 2014. We now run the summer school in partnership with the College.
The College opened in 1962 and is located in St Donats Castle, dating from the 12th Century AD, and surrounded by a beautiful Welsh, coastal campus. There are now 14 UWC colleges across the globe, with growth and development ongoing. Atlantic College was also instrumental in the founding of the International Baccalaureate in 1968 and continues to play a key role in the development of the IB today.
The College is renowned for its ethos and values of peace and justice, and for its community service commitment, based on the ideas of Kurt Hahn. The UWC Atlantic College mission is to “Make education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future”. At the heart of this is a culture of learning and personal challenge, which values the impact and energy of the young. Students actively become leaders ready to take on responsibility, determine their own future and to ‘make a positive difference in the world.’
The College campus offers a wealth of inspirational environments for us to utilise, from the medieval castle where we will eat and gather to work in larger groups, to the sea front swimming pools, cliffs and beach, the terraced gardens and wooded valleys. The history and natural beauty of the campus is inspiring and a powerful backdrop to the development of new and innovative ideas.
